THE HIMALAYAN OUTBACK

How we started our journey

Who we are

Who We Are

The Himalayan Outback, is considered one of the top companies world-wide that provide fly fishing trips.

The Himalayan Outback was started in 2004 by Mickey Sidhu and Misty Dhillon. The focus of this company from the start has been to provide the best experience and world class service to our guests; to ensure that our employees get the proper training that will enable them to perform their tasks to the best of their ability and provide them with career growth paths, and lastly; to educate communities where we operate in the benefits of “Catch & Release” fishing.

On the conservation front we participate in various efforts by providing support to local communities for the benefits of sustainable outdoor tourism. These efforts slowly yield results in protecting the Golden Himalayan Mahseer and the surrounding ecosystem in these sections of remote rivers.

We ensure that when we finish our trips that our staff does not leave a single piece of garbage behind – everything is collected and taken away for proper disposal. This is done even from the most remote locations in which we operate.

The majority of our staff has been hired from the areas in which we operate. They are given proper training and based on their individual interests we try and provide them with opportunities to grow in those fields.

Over the years The Himalayan Outback has had the opportunity to host television shows for the promotion of the very special Golden Himalayan Mahseer fishery. Angling show producers such as Canada based “What a Catch Productions” hosted by Kathryn Maroun, “Reel Outdoors” hosted by Chris Bailey, and “Hunt for big fish” hosted by Larry Dahlburg have all been hosted by The Himalayan Outback and have produced television shows on this legendary fish.

Today The Himalayan Outback, is considered one of the top companies world-wide that provide fly fishing trips. We are proud to say that we have helped put India and the Mahseer on the map for anglers in every major country.

Over 95 % of our guests are foreigners – the majority of them being from USA, UK, Netherlands and South Africa. We are slowly starting to appeal to the Indian market also and we have seen a gradual increase in domestic guests.

Due to the relatively short fishing season we started to also curate wildlife and multisport trips. The wildlife trips are primarily focused on tiger safaris in Corbett & Ranthambore; snow leopard trek in Ladhak and Spiti; and rhinoceros in Kaziranga Wildlife Park.

The main reason that we have repeat guests for is our reputation for full service. Right from the moment they land at the airport to their flight back home every detail is attended to in order to ensure that every traveler goes back more than satisfied, regardless whether they have caught a prize Mahseer or seen a tiger!

In 2018, we had our first season of Mahseer fishing in Arunachal. Even though the logistics were a nightmare we managed to get our river operations going like clockwork – despite an unpredictable monsoon our season was a success. The Arunachal operation was setup due to the ban on angling by Uttrakhand in August 2018 – we shifted all our trips to Arunachal at a very short notice. The Uttrakhand government has once again allowed fishing in the state, but as a result of the ban we were forced to look for other options … and now we have another destination to offer our guests – one that offers a lot of additional options like tribal culture and wildlife! Mahseer (both Golden & Chocolate) fishing trips to Arunachal are now a part of our regular offerings – an amazingly picturesque area, barely visited by even India tourists!
