Snow Leopard Safari | Day By Day

While Ladakh’s prolific frontiers have attracted travellers for various reasons. It is also one of the best places to see snow leopards while on safari and also on foot. Here’s our classic 11-day snow leopard safari guided by Ritish Suri.

Snow Leopard Holiday in Ulley

You’ll be met shortly after clearing customs at New Delhi airport. Chauffeured just 10-minutes from the airport into the luxury of The Roseate House. So you can recover from your long flight and settle in before meeting up with your guide for a briefing on the following day’s plan. Welcome to India!

Treat yourself to a delicious breakfast at The Roseate House (included). Finally, the hotel concierge will assist with transfers to the domestic airport to board your short flight to Leh.

Arrive at Leh. Just under 11,500 ft. Seems like a complete rest day at the Grand Dragon is the order of the day. In addition, drinking lots of water always helps with acclimatisation. Easier said than done. Welcome to your snow leopard safari!

Enjoy the clear blue skies, expansive panoramas of the city after a short drive to the Shanti Stupa. A Buddhist shrine set on a hill overlooking the town. A great place to visit. 

Later visit The Snow Leopard Conservancy in Leh. Feel inspired meeting passionate conservationists and learn about their ongoing projects.

In addition to dramatic views today’s 3 hours drive to Ulley will drive you past Nimmu. The mighty Indus is met by the Zanskar. Perhaps it’s largest tributary. Zanskar is one of the remotest regions of India. 

Further an hour down the road is Likir – one of Ladakh’s most spectacular Buddhist monasteries. Be amazed by the brilliant blue skyline. In addition to gain in elevation leading up a dirt-road following the Ulley Chu (a small stream), your hosts scan for possible wildlife sightings welcoming you into one of India’s finest Snow Leopard valleys.

Seems like a relaxed start is the order of most days at the Snow Leopard Lodge. Unless you want to join the trackers on their early morning survey based on which the day’s excursions are carried out. 

Breakfast is served at 08:30 am. While guides and trackers set up safari vehicles with a packed lunch. You are prepared to be out for the most part of the day. Driving, scanning, and hiking to vantage points. In addition to exploring neighboring valleys upon reports of sighting potential. 

Evenings are warm and cozy back at the lodge. Hot beverages served around a featured wildlife documentary that often initiates passionate conservations leading to the following day’s plan is the order of most evenings.

Finally, say goodbye to Ladakh and board your short flight to New Delhi. While most flights depart Leh in the morning. Seems like the early arrival into Delhi also leaves most with an option of an international connection back home on this day.
